SPIRITUAL CINEMA

Captivating conscious content is something that I am always seeking out. We have an untold amount of spiritual writing that has been handed down throughout the ages, and continues to pour in, often in the guise of self help.

The genre of spiritual filmmaking has been very hit and miss. Many films would fall under the heading of Christian. Biblical epics aside, these films tell stories with a message that inspires the Christian ideal. There are brilliant filmmakers that speak to the spirit through the art of cinema. Filmmakers such as Krzysztof Kieslowski, Robert Bresson, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Agnes Varda elevated consciousness poetically, sometimes jarringly, in their brilliant work. There are documentaries about spiritual subject matter. I had hoped that Wild Wild Country would be somewhat spiritual in nature, considering that the subject matter involved one of the spiritual giants of the twentieth century, but it was basically another true American crime reality series. Lisa Leeman’s moving tribute to Paramhansa Yogananda, Awake, touched on spiritual issues.

I feel like I am looking for cinema to do what it does best, transport me into another realm. Feature narratives do this well, when done well. Documentaries can, and should do, that and much more. In my work as a producer of spiritual documentary content, I strive to elevate and inspire. Aquarian Legacy Productions has been making short films for several years now, but we are still in our infancy. We seek to learn and grow. While our content has been basically about Sikh Dharma, we wish to expand and speak to the spirit in every religion and spiritual path. We are looking for collaborators, collusionists and content providers.

We all have cameras, many of us can edit on our laptops or phones, what is stopping us from our growth? And yes, we see the shadow in our subject matter, but we don’t fall into the trap of duality. We march forward, we rise above.
